New York Offshore Wind Alliance Welcomes EnBW North America, EDF Renewables, and Vineyard Wind

Growing Support for Offshore Wind Energy in New York Signals New York Can Achieve Its Clean Energy Standard

ALBANY, NY (MARCH 25, 2019) — The New York Offshore Wind Alliance today announced that EnBW North America, EDF Renewables, and Vineyard Wind have joined the Alliance, adding their powerful voices to the more than two dozen leading environmental, business, labor, wind industry and community organizations already supporting the effort to make the Empire State the national leader in offshore wind.

“The New York Offshore Wind Alliance is proud to welcome three new members to our growing alliance as we continue to build momentum for a cleaner environment, renewable energy and a stronger economic future for New York,” said Joe Martens, Director of the New York Offshore Wind Alliance (NYOWA).

“If we continue on the path Governor Cuomo has laid out, New York will be the nation’s leader in offshore wind development, powering hundreds of thousands of homes with clean, reliable, renewable energy, bringing new industries to the state, and creating thousands of good paying union jobs,” Martens said. “Other states are looking to expand their offshore wind reach, making it crucial that New York move swiftly to continue to lead.”

"EnBW North America is excited to join the New York Offshore Wind Alliance to help advance the Cuomo Administration’s historic commitment to responsible offshore wind development off the New York coastline," said Bill White, EnBW North America Managing Director. "With a diverse membership connected by a common mission, NYOWA is a central voice in New York's offshore wind conversation and we are proud to join the effort."

“EDF Renewables is enthusiastic about the quickly advancing US offshore wind industry and looks forward to being a contributing member of the New York Offshore Wind Alliance,” said Doug Copeland, Senior Manager, Offshore Wind Development, at EDF Renewables. “The Alliance will connect and engage the various players to deliver insights as we work together to meet New York’s ambitions goals.”

"Vineyard Wind is proud to partner with the New York Offshore Wind Alliance to advance the expansion and development of offshore wind in New York," said Erich Stephens, Chief Development Officer for Vineyard Wind. “As one of the most experienced and successful wind energy developers in the world, Vineyard Wind is excited to advance the Liberty Wind project in New York and help establish the Empire State as the world leader in offshore wind development. Through Liberty Wind, we look forward to working with the Alliance to support New York State efforts to meet its ambitious renewable energy goals, while providing much needed economic benefits to New Yorkers across the state.”

Governor Cuomo has proposed increasing the state’s Clean Energy Standard (CES) to a nation-leading 70% renewable electricity generation by 2030 and increasing the state’s offshore wind goal to 9,000 MW by 2035. The state can’t achieve 70% renewable generation without the 9,000 MW of offshore wind, making offshore wind a key part of this ambitious clean energy goal. “The growing interest of offshore wind companies signals that the private sector is ready and willing to invest in New York, helping us to achieve New York State’s clean energy goals. This investment is critical and demonstrates our commitment to addressing climate change,” said Martens.
